Casino Payment Methods

Every casino in Britain is excellent at taking money. The deposit screen is fast, it remembers your card, and it has never once asked me for a document. The withdrawal screen is a different building with different rules, and the gap between those two experiences is the most reliable thing you can learn about an operator.

18+ Gambling can be addictive and you must be 18 or over. In Great Britain an online casino may only be offered with a licence from the Gambling Commission under the Gambling Act 2005, and every licence is listed on the public register. Free, confidential support is available from the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133.

The rule that explains most of it: money goes back the way it came

Under anti-money-laundering obligations, a licensed operator returns funds to the source they arrived from, up to the amount deposited. Deposit £100 by debit card, win, and the first £100 goes back to that card whether you like it or not. Anything above it can usually go elsewhere — normally a bank transfer.

This single rule explains nearly every complaint I read. It is why a deposit made by phone bill cannot come back the same way, why a Paysafecard deposit forces a bank transfer on the way out, and why mixing three methods in a week guarantees a messy withdrawal.

Credit cards have been banned for gambling in Great Britain since April 2020, which people still occasionally discover at the cashier. That ban covers online and offline gambling, and it is not an operator’s decision.

Every welcome offer on a UK site carries a line about excluded payment methods, and on that page it is in the small print under the offer. Deposits by certain e-wallets very often do not qualify for a bonus. It is a standard term and it is also the most common reason a promised bonus does not appear.

The two halves of a withdrawal

A withdrawal has two parts and the operator only controls one. First the request sits with them for approval — this is where the differences between sites are enormous, from twenty minutes to several working days. Then the payment rail takes over, and that speed is largely fixed by the method: an e-wallet lands almost immediately, a card refund takes a couple of banking days no matter how quickly the casino worked.

So the number worth comparing is the total, which is what we publish. The detail, with measured figures, is on the fast withdrawal casinos page.

Ask a support agent how long their internal approval takes, rather than how long withdrawals take. The second question gets you the payment provider’s marketing. The first occasionally gets you the truth.

Reverse withdrawals: the setting worth turning off

Some sites hold a pending withdrawal for a day or two and let you cancel it and put the money back into play. That is a feature designed against you, and in Britain licensees are required to let you opt out of it and are not allowed to make cancelling attractive. Find the option, switch it off, and a whole category of regret disappears.

Fees, limits and the things that surprise people

  • Weekly and monthly caps. Most sites cap withdrawals per week. A large win can arrive in instalments and that is in the terms, not a dispute.
  • Minimum withdrawal. Usually £10 to £20. A balance below it is stuck unless support waives it, which they usually will if you ask to close the account.
  • Currency conversion. Playing in a currency other than sterling means paying a spread twice. There is no reason to do it at a UK site.
  • Fees. Licensed operators rarely charge for withdrawals. Your bank or e-wallet might; check on their side.

Crypto, briefly

You cannot deposit Bitcoin at a Gambling Commission licensee. The sites advertising crypto to British players are outside the UK licence entirely, with everything that implies, and the subject is dealt with on the crypto casinos page rather than glossed over here.

How we test a casino

Every site in our tables goes through the same four steps in the same order. We judge what actually happens, not what the front page says.

  1. 1Open an accountReal details, no test addresses.
  2. 2Deposit our own moneyNo test balance, nothing from the operator.
  3. 3Ask for a withdrawalThe clock starts on that click.
  4. 4Measured waitWe count until the money lands.

Criteria, weighting and when we say no

Why does my withdrawal go back to my card?

Because anti-money-laundering rules require funds to return to source up to the amount deposited. Winnings above that can normally go to a bank account.

Can I deposit with a credit card?

No. Credit card gambling has been banned in Great Britain since April 2020.

Why was I asked for a bank statement?

Source-of-funds checks are required in some circumstances under the money laundering regulations. It is legitimate — what is worth noting is whether the site warned you it might happen.

Which payment method is fastest overall?

PayPal and the e-wallets, because the rail is instant once the operator approves. The approval step is still the variable that matters.

About the author: Nell Ashworth

Before I started writing about casinos I spent six years in the financial-crime team of a UK payments firm — which is to say, on the side of the desk that halts a transfer and asks for paperwork. That is why I can usually tell a check that genuinely has to happen from a check that is simply a convenient reason to delay a payout.

I open the accounts myself, deposit my own money, ask for it back and write down how long it actually took. There is no more method than that. If a site takes deposits by card but only pays out to a bank account, it goes in the text rather than in a footnote.
